BMW has scored racing successes around the globe with its motorcycles, touring and sports cars, at rallies, in Formula 2 and in Formula One. Yet never has the company lost sight of the importance of promoting young racing talent. Innovative technology for sporting competitions and record-breaking attempts has been an integral aspect of the BMW identity since the company’s fledgling years. It has defined BMW production cars – and made motorsport history. In the 2008 season, BMW’s commitment in motor racing will again be based on several pillars. While the BMW Sauber F1 Team will compete on the Formula One stage, the five drivers in the BMW national teams will once again battle for points in the FIA World Touring Car Championship: Andy Priaulx is homing in on his fourth WTCC title in a row. BMW has topped the manufacturers’ standings for the last three seasons. Augusto Farfus, Jörg Müller, Félix Porteiro and Alessandro Zanardi have also proved in the past that they have what it takes to be a winner in the highest category of touring car racing. The focus of Formula BMW is on talented juniors. Three top-class, entry-level series around the world allow drivers aged 15 and above to gain their first experience of single-seater racing. In 2008, seven race meetings of the newly created Formula BMW Europe will be staged as part of the support programme for Formula One events. Points and victories are also up for grabs in the Formula BMW Americas and Formula BMW Pacific series. At the end of the year, the winner of the Formula BMW World Final receives the chance to take a drive for the BMW Sauber F1 Team. Customer racing also remains a central component of the BMW Motorsport programme for 2008. The BMW brand is represented by the countless private drivers competing in BMW racing cars around the world, in various classes and championships. BMW recognises their performances in many ways, including the lucrative BMW Sports Trophy, which is awarded annually to the most successful private drivers.
